Tubular cell damage may be the earliest sign of renal extrahepatic manifestation caused by Hepatitis C

2021

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is one of the most well-known extrahepatic manifestations caused by hepatitis C infection (HCV). CKD is typically discovered at a late stage. HCVnephropathy may show different histopathologic patterns, as both glomerular and tubulointerstitial damage have been described. Identification of patients with early renal manifestations would be beneficial to provide treatment and avoid progres…

Diabetic foot ulcers: Retrospective comparative analysis from Sicily between two eras

2021

Aim The aim of this study was to analyze changes in the incidence, management and mortality of DFU in Sicilian Type 2 diabetic patients hospitalized between two eras, i.e. 2008–2013 and 2014–2019. Methods We compared the two eras, era1: 2008–13, era2: 2014–19. In era 1, n = 149, and in era 2, n = 181 patients were retrospectively enrolled. Results In the population hospitalized for DFU in 2008–2013, 59.1% of males and 40.9% of females died, whilst in 2014–2019 65.9% of males and 34.1% of females died. Moderate chronic kidney disease (CKD) was significantly higher in patients that had died than in ones that were alive (33% vs. 43%, p < 0.001), just as CKD was severe (14.5% vs. 4%, p <…

Interactions of pharmaceutical companies with world countries, cancers and rare diseases from Wikipedia network analysis

2019

AbstractUsing the English Wikipedia network of more than 5 million articles we analyze interactions and interlinks between the 34 largest pharmaceutical companies, 195 world countries, 47 rare renal diseases and 37 types of cancer. The recently developed algorithm using a reduced Google matrix (REGOMAX) allows us to take account both of direct Markov transitions between these articles and also of indirect transitions generated by the pathways between them via the global Wikipedia network. This approach therefore provides a compact description of interactions between these articles that allows us to determine the friendship networks between them, as well as the PageRank sensitivity of countr…

La qualità della vita in soggetti in età evolutiva affetti da patologie renali croniche

2005

Atra. Renai pathologies bave an hard impact on ili children's life style, psychic and physical development. Inthelastyears, evenif medicai cures allowed these children to live longer and to bave a better quality of life, today both their families and themselves bave to face a lot of difficulties due to thè kind of pathology. These cbildren show behaviour troubles, bad sociability, aggressiveness, poorschool performance, anxiety and depression, and then thè subjects with chronic renai failure show a retard in neurological and cognitive development In this study we evatuated thè impact that thè chronic renai illness has on children and adolescente' quality life. Methods. Por this study, we ba…

Retinal vascular imaging in cardiovascular medicine: New tools for an old examination

2017

The old concept that the eye is the only window through which the body microcirculation can be observed in life easily, safely and repeatedly is part of the cultural baggage of every physician. When Hermann von Helmholtz invented the direct ophthalmoscope in 1850, he opened the door to a non-invasive visualization of human microcirculation in vivo at the retina. Only a few years later, the Scottish ophthalmologist Marcus Gunn documented the close association between retinal changes, and renal and cardiovascular diseases (CVD) in hypertensive patient. In 1939, Keith, Wagener, and Barker showed that the severity of retinal microvascular abnormalities was predictive of mortality in patients wi…

Cardiovascular and Renal Outcomes of Renin–Angiotensin System Blockade in Adult Patients with Diabetes Mellitus: A Systematic Review with Network Met…

2016

Background Medications aimed at inhibiting the renin–angiotensin system (RAS) have been used extensively for preventing cardiovascular and renal complications in patients with diabetes, but data that compare their clinical effectiveness are limited. We aimed to compare the effects of classes of RAS blockers on cardiovascular and renal outcomes in adults with diabetes. Methods and Findings Eligible trials were identified by electronic searches in PubMed/MEDLINE and the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews (1 January 2004 to 17 July 2014). Interventions of interest were angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors, angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs), and direct renin (DR) inhibitors. T…
